Faulty thermostat problem?
keep the door shut?
a flame thrower usually works for me!
If your freezer is full, it won`t build up so quickly, some people stuff the freezer with newspapers, to fill it and prevent freezing.
If you don`t use it much and are just keeping it on for the sake of the fridge, you could fill it with some biggish containers, (ice cream containers, maybe) will probably be best if you fill them with water.
I`m not certain , but I think an empty fridge or freezer uses more electricity.
Trish's right, and I was going to suggest what Sach's said. faulty thermostats seem to commonly cause this type of problem. how old's your freezer?
Beside the faulty thermostat as above, is the freezer showing signs of age? A hardened, leaky or cracked seal will cause ice buildup.
Also, and don't take offense please, is 1 the coldest setting?.
