email attachments

Hi folks,
I have yahoo mail. A colleague has sent me two attachments, one as a microsoft publisher attachment, the other as a .dat file attachment. How do I open these please? I have only ever received 'word' attachments and these are easy to download and open, but I can't sus out how to open publisher or .dat attachments. Anyone help?
