Any sparks out there? Whats best way to avoid table lamp shade getting charred? Can I try smaller bulb, so its further away from shade, or does it need to be lower wattage?

Size isn't directly important, just the heat it gives off. A compact fluorescent will usually be fine, no matter what it's wattage is. Compact fluorescent lights give out far cooler temperatures than standard filament bulbs.

If you have to use a filament bulb, then the lower the wattage usually means a cooler bulb.
