Friend of mine broke (dropped) his PC and he has loads of photographs he needs to recover on the HD - can anyone recommend a good company that will be able to recover data for him? He has been quoted by a company in Northern Ireland nearly 1000 and they say there is only a 20% chance of recovery.

Please help. Many thanks.

Most of these data recovery companies do charge a lot of money.

If the photograhps were that important to him he should have had them backed up to CD or DVD.

People with PCs or laptops should work on the principle of "worst case scenario", if my PC or laptop got stolen, damaged or crashed would I be able to recover all the data on it.

Sorry to be so harsh, but backup is VERY important.

Thanks 'vehelpfulguy' I know what you mean and completely understand. I am a Mac user and an illustrator and ALWAYS back up - it's a silly mistake not to and is a bit of a 'Doh!' situation when it goes wrong.
He dropped his PC...

while it was on, or turned off?

If it was just turned off, the hard drive is most likely fine. Just disconnect it and connect it to another PC (checking what type of connection, SATA etc.).
My money is on fo3nix
HDDs are pretty tough little things (especially when wrapped in a PC to take most of the impact! <];o0)

A HDD enclosure (2.5" for a laptop - 3.5" if a desktop)
won't cost the earth .... and will allow your chum to connect his HDD to someone else's machine to back up this photos

(and when he gets a new pc .... he can use the portable disc to back up any new photos (assuming he doesn't drop his camera!))
