New digi box keeps blanking out sound?

We bought a new digi box and dvd recorder before Christmas but halfway through anything taped, the sound goes off for about 15 mins, then suddenly comes back and is fine. Mr ES thinks its the box as he has spent hours fiddling with connections etc. and can't see what else it can be. Can anyone help? (PS, I don't even get to hold the controls, so don't understand any of it myself!).
