Firewire problem with DV camera

Anybody any experience of having the firewire connection on a DV camera being 'blown' by their computer. The output from the camera to the computer no longer works. There has been a suggestion of a bad earth. How can this be tested? In some cases it might have been the firewire plug being connected (or attempting to) the wrong way round (you shouldn't be able to because of the designof the plug!).

Any help appreciated before I try another camera on this machine.
