Does anyone know whether these can be used with the TV on normal volume, or will the TV be muted when the transmitter is plugged in?

That depends entirely on your tv, not the headphones.

They headphone base is plugged into the headphone socket on your television.

If plugging headphones in cancels the speakers, then this is exactly what will happen with these headphones.
when earphones, wireless or not are connected the tv is muted,as the object is for only the person wearing the earphones can hear the sound. hope this helps.

Hi Ethel and Callboy - thanks for your answers - my Dad is going deaf so needs the telly up very loud! I'm trying to find a pair of reasonably priced headphones which will allow my mum to listen to the telly at normal volume, but my Dad can turn it up in the headphones - do they exist?!
My television is a Sony and the volume to the headphones and speakers are independent, so a hard of hearing person can use headphones and the other can have the tv on low volume.

So it may be a change of television if your parents' tv does not have this feature.

Beware - shockingly some newer tvs do not have headphone sockets.
