DVD connection problem

We've been given a DVD player and are now trying to get it connected to our ancient (pre-Scart) Mitsubishi TV. I've got a 3 RCA to Scart cable. I tried putting the Scart lead in the DVD and the yellow and red jacks into the TV in the relevant places, pressing the AV button on the TV and .... nothing.
Tried attaching the Scart to our VHS and the jacks to the DVD and pressing 0 on the TV remote (where we usually get video) ... nothing. Any ideas about a) what I'm doing wrong and b) what I should try next?

Thanks, N. I played a bit more and found an AV channel by using the video remote. That seems to have done the trick. Thanks for the answer, though, it gave me the impetus to have another go.
