Help for iMovie and iDVD

My son has compiled a video of my daughter's wedding using iMovie. No special effects but has titles at the beginning and end. He moved it to iDVD to burn discs and added a menu page to select chapters as on a normal DVD. Run time is about 100 minutes but it is now showing as 53Gb! which is far too large to burn to disc. What has he done wrong? We are both novices at this so any help would be greatly appreciated.
