Probably because you can't sell it if it's free.
I started off using Norton, but was frustrated by the way it slows your PC down, and when its go wrong the support is poor. I run AVG (free version) on both my laptops and PC and I like it a lot. Its a small application, doesnt use much processing and has protected me fine.

I also use zone alarm free firewall and they both keep me safe.
PC World are useless.

I've used AVG for ages on both laptop and PC and not had any problems at all. I would recommend it (and I do!)
Do not listen to Pc World.

Pc Gamer, PC Magazine and Which? Magazine have all recommended AVG for years.

I use AVG in conjunction with Norton Anti-virus and I've had no trouble with it what so-ever. It even detects things that Norton's hasn't.
I have used AVG on all my pcs for years without problems, along with the free firewall ZoneAlarm and other free progs such as Spybot and Adaware.

PC World will not recommend free things - it is not in their interests to do so.
If you look at their Top Security Suites section you will find that they rank Norton Internet Security 2006 as No1.
I have been in the IT business since 1979 and support hundreds of customers in the UK and can tell you from personal experience that this product is unreliable, it will slow your machine, it fiddles with the Operating System Kernel, and is such a mess that, by the company's own admission, is a nightmare to try and remove.

PC World is what I class as a "Wowie Zowie" magazine - short on technical know-how but really good at articles on the lines of "Wowie Zowie this machine/software is so cool/fast/complicated [delete where not applicable]!"

Thanks all you guys. Interesting views but I am concerned by Rojash's comments. I respect Ethel's opinions and am a bit confused by the diversity between the various comments.
Like Rojash I've been in the business for years. I have always used, and recommended Antivir. I know of no one who has had problems with this
Is Rojash saying that Norton is rubbish, or AVG? His first sentence mentions Norton, and the second states that this product is unreliable, so I am assuming that he thinks Norton is rubbish.

I use AVG free and Zone Alarm, and although I have only been using it for a short while, I am very impressed so far.

Teak, you have a point. I didn't interpret it that way. Perhaps Rojash could clarify please.
Sorry, was I in rambling mode?

What I meant was Norton is absolute rubbish: this is not just my opinion but is also that of every developer around the world with whom I am in contact.

PcWorld rate their suite as No. 1.

Therefore, PcWorld's opinions are completely worthless.

I recommend AVG to all my clients.
