Following on from my previous msg can anyone suggest a good lap top that is wi-fi and broadband compatible (I am very ignorant to these things) and haven't a clue what to get (after being done up big time by PC world before I don't want to do the same again).

I am looking to spend around 500-700 although can go more if needs be. All I want it for is to be able to get broadband or wi-fi and to be able to have word on it for letters and that (just for home use).

Oh and to be able to add a mouse to it as i am not sure i will be able to get on with a touch screen. Thanks

All laptops sold today are broadband compatible and the vast majority are wi - fi enabled.

You can buy a mouse that plugs in to the USB port.

You do not need to spend 500. For your needs around 400 will buy you a more than adequate laptop. This one is out of stock - but is a great laptop for the money:

thanks Ethel - that looks like a great lap top :-)
You say you want Word on your laptop.

Most laptops (and PCs) do NOT come with Word on them that is part of Microsoft Office and will cost you almost as much as the laptop.

There are free word processors around, and in fact Tesco are starting to sell an office suite for 20 that includes a word processor.

That will probably be good enough for the average home user.
Yet again my hyperlink has been censored.

The word is E N T R Y I D (it does not like the Y I D at the end)

Note the Tesco office suite is based on Ability Office

Two things about the laptop Ethel found (well done Ethel).

First, it is out of stock.

Secondly, the screen size is only 14.1 inches, which is VERY small and you would soon get fed up with it.

I would try to go for a bigger screen, at least 15" or more.

Or consider getting a 17" or 19" external monitor and plugging it in.

Try Dell and you should find something that meets your requirements -

It won't come with Word pre-installed but you can download Open Office for free from here -

I use this on my Dell laptop and have no faults with it whatsoever.

thanks lost sheep - i will check them out.
The latest MS Works suite comes with Word - exactly the same version that's included in Office.

And for solo home use, the old Works word processor is more than adequate.
