I have just zipped a Word file and it has only compressed it by 2% which is no use to me.
How do I compress it to at least 50% and is that indeed possible? Need to send an attachment but it keeps bouncing out of recipient's inbox.

upload the file to some webspace, you ISP usually provides some for free.

Then just send the recipient the link so they can download the file.

Use that service.

Compression algorithms like the zip compression algorithm work well for stuff that can be compressed, i.e., text documents, and things like that with lots of gaps that can be removed temporarily.

A word file is a binary document, which is already highly compressed, hence why you don't get good results.
