I have a small stereo which I could plug into the mains in the USA (110 Volts). How do I use it in the UK, will I need a transformer or can I just buy a new lead and plug it straight in?

NO you can't just plug it straight in with a new lead as UK domestic voltage is 220~240v so you will either have to buy a step up transformer or alternately see if it has an internal or external voltage selector switch which allows you to change the input voltage setting...you normally find this on newer bits of electrical kit.
