I used to have problems connecting to the internet with internet explorer so I now also have Mozilla which was fine .....until I switched from Norton Antivirus to AVG free version (I thought I was doing the right thing). Now I have problems connecting via both servers. I either keep getting dial up connection (I've got a wireless router which shouldn't even prompt me to connect) which shows me working offline all the time or I get timed out because the connection is taking so long. Along with AVG I downloaded ZoneAlarm firewall and Spybot. Is it something to do with these programmes? I'm getting that technophobic feeling !

I use Firefox all the time, and have AVG, ZoneAlarm and Spybot, so they can and should work together fine.

Have you completely removed Norton from your hard drive?

Open ZoneAlarm control centre and check your settings. On the left hand side is Program Control. Click on that and the programmes tab at the top.

Make sure both Firefox and IE are ticked.

Click on the Firewall tab, and reduce your settings to medium if they are set to high.

But make sure you have completely removed Norton from your system:

Thanks for that Ethel. You're really helpful. Just waiting now to make sure everything's running smoothly. I did everything you said to do - Norton removal tool and all that. Just one thing - I've been trying to get onto fco.gov.uk for days now. I'm trying to find out about travelling to mexico for some friends and know that it's a really helpful site. But I just can't get onto it from my computer. I've tried from other peoples' computers and can access the site without any problems at all. Any ideas?
Hope everything is sorted for you now. I can get on to the FCO site through FF without problem:

I can't understand why you can't. Have you got your settings too high in Internet Options? Have you got Java and cookies enabled?

What happens when you try to access the site?

Ethel. This is the message I'm getting when attempting to connect to fco.gov.uk:

The connection has timed out.
The server at www.fco.gov.uk is taking too long to respond.
* The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few moments.
* If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network connection.
* If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.
Thanks for your help with this. Not sure about the Java thing though - sorry, technophobic on your hands here !!
There are of course a couple of other possibilities like is there a virus or spyware causing running time issues?

Or if your RAM is almost full then it can cause severe slowness problems on the PC

Look for all this too
