Can anyone recommend some tried & tested sites where you can get free antivirus downloads (trials are good, too)? I would also be interested in knowing where you can get PC Help or PC related programs (eg. Word) either for free or that have been tried and tested and are excellent value for money? Thanks in advance.

I have used AVG antivirus for a while now and find it to be excellent for a free virus checker....find it here http://www.grisoft.com as for other stuff why not try WinMX or Kazaa and download cracked versions for any software that you want? Not that would recommend this or condone it :>)
The downloads section of ZDnet.com has loads of freeware/shareware

Just do a search on what you are looking for. You can then refine the results to just free stuff. Here is a search I did for free antivirus software:

I too use AVG from grisoft.com, it proved its worth recently by intercepting a trojan.
http://www.download.com Allsorts of legit stuff here for PC and Mac.
I use this one, also free: http://www.free-av.com/
I have just used the link and downloaded the file from grisoft. Its fine if you need a CBBC Balamory screensaver? But no anti virus programme!
If you want an online virus check click on the link below for Housecall from Trend PC-Cillin. http://housecall.antivirus.com/housecall/start_cor

Like sft42 I have been using AVG (from Grisoft) with no problems for around 9 months (with regular upgrades for free), Got it on the cover disk of a magazine but try here also http://www.grisoft.com/html/us_index.htm
I prefer www.sophos.com. You get a month free trial and although it costs a lot, they are seriously up to date. You get a new anti virus update at least once a day sometimes more.
