Is there anyway of checking from where an email originated from?

Try looking in the internet headers for an ip address. Once you find that you could try looking it up in a RIPE database online (google for RIPE). This MAY give you the name of the organisation that the email came from.

If youre talking about spam email, a lot of the ip addresses are spoofed or hidden anyway.

To be honest there's very little you can actually find out.
