Newest Version of Windows Live Messenger loading problems

Hope some of you might have an idea as to how I can solve this problem. I have had Windows XP on my computer for years now and have regularly updated it. And yet, when I want to download the new version of Windows Live Messenger, it keeps telling me that I first need to update my computer system to XP. It doesn't seem to want to recognise that I have got XP and a legal copy at that, which came with my computer! Has anyone got any idea how I can solve this? I've emailed msn help desk, but no answer.
