Can you manually over ride a child lock on a telly that has inadvertantly been set by a child and no one knows the code?

I take it you've looked in the manual to the TV and found out what the default code is and tried that? (usually 0000 or 1111). The child might have just turned the child lock on - not changed the code. If you think the child might have inadvertantly entered a new random code, you could try unplugging the TV for 5 or 10 minutes. This can sometimes cause electrical items to revert to their default settings. If that fails, tell the child that they won't be able to watch *enter their favourite programme here* until they remember the code they entered! They might 'miraculously' remember it, you never know. If all these suggestions fail, then i don't know what else to suggest apart from contacting your local TV repair shop. A friend of mine locked himself out of his own TV once, and he's supposed to be an adult! Fortunately (for him), the code was still set as the default code which i found printed in his manual! He won't do it again, bless his cotton socks.
You could try....powering it on with all the buttons depressed (you may need to borrow extra fingers), it's quite a common reset for basic logic systems. Or....Try holding down the Play/on button for more than 8 seconds after it had been powered on and it may be worth trying this with all the buttons (in turn) for at least 10 seconds. Or......Hold down 'P+' on the front of the set whilst turning the set on. Or.......failing all these, call the customer care number for your TV manufacturer who should talk you through the unlocking procedure.
This usually works: Press the Red, Green, and Blue buttons one at a time on the remote, then press Yellow for about 20 seconds.
As most replies have suggested there is generally a "back door" or roundabout way to reset it. Get the make/model and try feeding it into a search engine, or alternatively ring the manufacturer, to find out what the back door is (they will want the serial number as well - to check the TV belongs to you)
