With canons you won't go too far wrong. They're good cameras. But still have a look round, and see if you can think of what you want in the camera.
Is it most important for you that it's small so you can put it in your bag? Will you be mostly taking pictures of your kids? (then you'll want something with some sort of fast shutter mode so that the action is frozen and not blurred). That sort of thing.
Sony and Fuji also make some good cameras too. My personal tip is Casio, check them out. They're generally very well priced, and have some really excellent cameras. They're often overlooked because people associate them (as I did initially) as a manufacturer of watches and calculators, and not really in the camera business. While that was once very true, their current breed of cameras is superb. I own the Z750, and I know of two professional photographers who say that they carry it round with them in their pocket, just in case their main big expensive SLR gets damaged.
