Don't know about "to DVD", but WinAVI ($30) does a good and fast job of "to VCD" conversions.
If it takes about 8 hours to burn a DVD, I would suggest that you have a problem with your computer, which I doubt just replacing the Roxio with some other software will cure.
try reducing the quality of the output (i.e. super long play), as long as the file covers about 1 gigabyte in the end it wont lose any quality from the original AVI/MPEG, and it should take about a quarter of the time to encode and burn.

I find that burning a dvd in nero 7 lasts as long as the movie(approximately) ie 2 hr movie takes 2 hrs to burn.

If yours takes 8 hrs then it suggests to me that you need a serious upgrade !

with winavi it takes 40-70 mins for a film to convert from avi to dvd, nero 7 about 2-3 hrs to burn the dvd files to disc, if i convert and burn in one go its the longest 7-8 hrs, would it be owt to do with only 256mb ram
If its taking 2/3 hours to burn the files to disc and they are already in DVD format, i would suggest its a problem with your DVD drive. try getting the latest firmware for the drive and using a better quality DVD media. I can burn a DVD-R (4.7gb) in about 18 mins and get a 99% burn success rate.
P.S. and i only have 256 ram too.
