I hope they both fail - I've spent a fortune building my dvd collection
whickerman: they may both fail, but something will take their place. just annoying how soon they are being introduced, after DVDs have only recently become especially popular.

however, hd-dvd players (this includes bluray discs) should be quite capable of playing back regular old dvds.

personally I see bluray taking over. especially if the PS3 comes about.
I think HD-DVD will prevail on this one. One major factor is that it so much cheaper to produce HD-DVD discs and equipment than the equivalent blu-ray stuff.

But the main reason I think blu-ray will fail is that Sony have a proven track record in taking an excellent, potentially mainstream format (minidisc & memory stick for example), and tying them up in restrictive licencing deals for potential manufacturers, thus ensuring their products stay niche.

They also can make them difficult for their customers to use (their Sonic Stage software for their "MP3" players is flaky rubbish) and they have previously shown amazing disregard for their customers with their "rootkit" fiasco on their CD's. All in all, I think their own arrogance will mean the format won't take off. Generally though, I love their stuff!

It's still a little early to be sure, but I tend to agree that HD-DVD will win.

fo3nix, has a valid point about the PS3, it's the only 'killer app' likely to save Bluray.

The issue Ralph touched upon is the critical factor, production cost!

Existing DVD manufactures need only upgrade equipment to make HD-DVD's (cost =thousands), Bluray requires entirely new plant facilities (cost =millions).

Yes, I totally agree on all of Ralph's points too. It's going to be a close match, probably with one major deal that makes the difference.

it is vhs vs betamax all over again but i am with fo3nix that blu-ray will win.in my opinion, simply because this is sonys format of choice and they have the power to make or break it as they will sell blu-ray ps3's by the truck load and then have their movie division to pump movies thru inc back catalogues.

a perfect example is umd all thanks to the psp

of course it is bluray. it is developing fast and it will take place of dvd one day.
