Laptop Issues - Your Opinions Please

For many years I've used the same tech expert to help me (I am not good with technology) with all my computer problems.  Last week my laptop, on which I've got a huge amount of important work, fell on the floor and its screen smashed.  The keyboard half survived.  My tech expert offered to get me a new laptop (to the spec he knows I need) and have it delivered to my address, and lift all my documents, photos etc off my broken laptop and install them on the new laptop.  He said the new laptop cost £845 and his work would cost £200.  Anxious to get up and running again, I agreed.  I paid for the laptop.  After completing the work on both laptops he invoiced me for £400, saying it had taken longer than he'd anticipated.  He is extremely experienced and I believe he should have anticipated it'd take longer.  When jobs I do in the Media take longer than I expect, I don't get paid extra.  He didn't tell me during the job "I'm now going over the agreed £200..." which I think he should have.  Do you think it's right he should charge me double the pre agreed fee?   I've asked him for the sales receipt and warranty of the new laptop, and he won't let me have them.  He says that if the new laptop goes faulty within the next year that he will fix it free of charge.   But I say what if something happens to him, as could happen to anybody, I won't have a warranty.  I think he won't let me have the sales receipt because he got the laptop for much less money than he got me to pay for it, and he doesn't want me to know how much.  Your opinions and advice please

I would pay him the £200 as agreed, keep my fingers crossed that nothing goes wrong with the new laptop & never deal with him again.

I reckon you could have got a good laptop for much less than £845 - you should have asked Buenchico (on AB) for recommendations!

You know the make and model of the laptop, it will be easy to find the average price. Remember to make sure you are comparing exactly the same - same RAM, SSD, processor, screen size etc.

He is ripping you off with the charge to transfer your data etc and I would not let a third party fix a laptop within the first year, unless that is his business and you have a receipt to prove you bought it new from him - it would void your consumer rights and any warranty.

Before deciding what to do, spend a bit of time researching the laptop you bought, including the release date. Have you got the warranty card to register it in your name?

Sorry, I now realise you haven't got the warranty.

Is this guy doing it from home or does he have a business? the whle thing stinks unfortunately, have you got another friend who could help you fight your case (threat for example)? It is totally unacceptable to pay that much for a laptop and get no  receipt or proof of purchase nor to overcharge on the transfer of data off the hard drive, most of which would happen after he'd clicked a button, not having to sit there over time transferring files individually. This is very awkward for you to handle buut he is completely taking you for a ride in my view.

For the sake of comparison, Currys charge £45 to transfer data from one laptop to another. It really is very quick and simple if you know how to do it

sounds like an idiot conman. To get your files off is a few minutes work.  Just use onedrive in future then your files are safe and accessible from anywhere.

I purchased a new lap top from Currys for £600 and they set it all up and gave me an hours tutorial on how every thing works for £20 - I think you are being taken for a ride. Just pay what you agreed and next time visit Currys ( my local one has very good customer service).

You could check the price of the laptop model on-line; but unless you are involved in high-end gaming you don’t need a laptop costing £845.

With regard the £200 for transferring the data, he should have stuck with the agreed price regardless of how much work/time was involved.  Even so, he had to buy the laptop on line, extract the old drive and connect it up (with software allowing the transfer) and set it up as you want; £200 might be a bit much but after all if he is doing this as a business, he’s got to make a living from it.

To avoid this ever happening again, buy an external hard drive and regularly back-up any important data.  You could have lost all the data on your old laptop, had its hard drive failed.

This drive at 2TB capacity should be more than enough for your needs.

I am ok with driving the pc, but when something goes wrong beyond my ability I call in my 'man'.  He is prompt, professional and clearly priced.  Sometimes he will arrive to unscramble an issue and fix it in double quick time.  He then tells me there is forty minutes left on his visit and is there anything else you want me to do. Priceless at £60 an hour, at home, my choice of day and time.

As has been said, get the model number and other spec then either look it up or put it here for us to help.

Is this expert a business or just somebody doing it as a sideline?

Was it delivered to you direct, or did you get it after your files had been transferred?  If it was direct was the suppliers name on the packaging?

He runs his business from home, and has done for decades.   He had the new laptop delivered to me.  I can't see the senders details on the box.  It is a Dell Latitude 3550. Intel i5 processor.  16GB Memory.  512GB SSD.  Windows 11 Pro

He transferred the data by Attended Remote PC after it was delivered

The remote access is neither here nor there - it simply saved him a trip to your home.

What a rogue !   Pay £100 "on account" then ignore him completely in the future, find another techie.
