Hi, can anyone tell me what the legal implications of asking ChatGPT to create something and then copying it to use in a work by yourself is?

Some websites say it's ok and others say you should only use it for prompts.

Good question. I create a lot of AI generated images and found this article well balanced

UK Copyright in AI-Generated Artwork - Strachan IP https://search.app/eXrN249n97aidzMWA

Thankyou barry1010, that's very useful.

Actually that link is over a year old so not sure it's relevant. It also only discusses artwork rather than the written word.
Does anyone have any more specific, up to date, answers please?

It would be the same for the written word

I asked my AI assistant and this is the reply

'As of now, the copyright for the text and images I generate belongs to you, the user, as per OpenAI's policy.

For text, you are free to use it however you wish, including commercial use. Similarly, for images generated via DALL·E (the image tool), the copyright for the images is transferred to you as well, and you can use them for commercial or personal purposes.

However, keep in mind that while you own the generated content, it’s always good to review the terms and conditions of the specific service you're using in case they have any additional considerations or limitations'

Well, I suppose that's one way of finding out. Ha ha. Thankyou again.
This is quite an interesting site. I've been having a browse around and there are some.....interesting.....opinions floating around.

Diverse opinions make for lively and sometimes strident debate.

It's not all serious, though. 😁

What if the AI-produced output is too similar to the original source(s) on which it is based?

I think it depends on what and who you are creating it for.

Example be the civil service now rejects applicants who have used AI in their applications and give warnings that this will happen.
