If I bought in-ear (Bluetooth wireless earbuds) can I use them whilst away from WiFi, there is no mobile signal in my village, I would like to use them out walking with music on my iPhone 14? The internet gives mixed messages! Any input appreciated. Thanks

Download the music to your phone then you don't need a mobile signal

With the music downloaded to your phone then yes Bluetooth earbuds will work wherever you are as long as they're paired to your phone. Bluetooth uses radiowaves to connect not wifi nor mobile signal.

The earbuds connect to your phone via Bluetooth.

If the music is downloaded to your phone you can listen to it through the earbuds anywhere.

If it isn't, your phone will need to be connected to the internet

Yes I have the music on my phone but wasn't sure whether I need WIFI to send the music to my headphones without a wired connection, dumb question I know, but I really don't know!

Bluetooth is completely independent of wifi or internet connectivity. It is a short range low powered radio signal. Any device that has the Bluetooth capability built in or added after manufacture can be "paired" with other bluetooth devices that are within range. It can be good, therefor, but can also be prone to drop out and random pairings with other perhaps malicious bluetooth devices in public places.

Thanks everyone that seems like the perfect solution for listening to music or books away from WiFi ! Get me walking! ( I am officially an IT numpty these days!)

For the techies out there, Bluetooth devices operate in the shortwave UHF 2.4Ghz band and can both send and recieve.

Purchase made, i didn't buy Apple they were silly money but £20 for  a different brand who's reviews looked good , from a River named Distributor who's returns policy is pretty good if they don't work as I'm hoping!

Random info. Bluetooth was developed by the Ericson company in Sweden and one of the legendary Viking "stories" was about the Danish king Harold Bluetooth. Who was apparently a rather good communicator over short distances. If he didn't like you he took out his sword and ran you through.

That great! I had that in the back of my Crossword brain somewhere!

Do you use a streaming service?

Question Author

No i downloaded loads of Albums years ago, so don't stream music! I guess the chance of getting Radio 4 is impossible!

Question Author

And occasionally use Kindle Audio books which I assume are downloaded but I rarely use those!

The downside of wireless earphones is that their batteries run out of charge eventually, so you have to stop listening & recharge them.

If you want to listen to a radio station on your phone whilst out walking ( or anywhere for that matter !) you would need to use wired headphones - the cable acts as an aerial. I've tried it with wireless earbuds and it doesn't work. Good luck and happy listening !

fbg, should work with an internet radio app on your phone.

Earbuds should run for 5-6 hours, some claim to run for much longer.

^barry beat me to it. I'm listening to a live New Zealand station (The Wireless FM 90.4) at the moment...phone and wireless earbuds.

Thanks I can but try with the radio! My ear buds arrived today and were really easy to connect to Bluetooth, the quality seems good and I hope to use them when the ice melts and walk outdoors more!  £20.00 well spent providing my darling doggy does get his teeth around them!

Barry

I stand corrected ( or sit !) - will have to try your method, thanks.

Try the BBC Sounds app for BBC radio stations, FBG
