Has anyone tried the wireless links, sold by Maplin et al for around 40 quid, that plug into the USB connections, and does away with a cable link? Will it work with any inkjet printer that is USB?

Yes maplins wireless printer kits will work with any usb printer, as the printer does not know or care whether it is a cable or wireless. Personally I would prefer/recommend a 54g wireless print server as the ones maplin supply are not standard, but obvously only if you have a wireless lan installed already, as it would be excessive to install one just for a printer. Therefore I guess it is a cheaper alternative. I notice lack of specs on Maplins website regarding distance and configuring options (as in what if you use more than within vacinity of another etc.)?
