Mobile Phones

Another question prompted this. I would love not to have a mobile phone but our culture now seems to accept we all have them and has made it almost impossible to do without one.

I rarely use mine and don't take it out with me, or i turn it off when I am out. My OH and son are the same.

Are we alone?

My husband doesn't even have a mobile phone. It's a nuisance sometimes but he insist he doesn't want one.

I am with you, Lottie. I have a simple pay-as-you-go cheap phone which is often switched off. I have it for my safety and peace of mind when I am travelling in my car, usually on my own. Even in my dotage I am grateful that with a phone and a plastic card I feel I can go anywhere by myself.

It's the assumption that we use them for absolutely everything that gets me. Yes, they are useful, but I simply don't want to base my life around a phone. I don't want to talk on the phone when I am out and about which is why I turn it off. I much prefer using a land line for business phone calls and chats. And I don't like using the internet on a phone.

And I don't want an app for banking! I am quite happy to do on line banking from our computer! (The bank keep asking me if i want the app!! Grrr.

I am currently using David's old dumb phone, it normally lies dying in the bottom of my handbag. Resisting getting a smart phone but it is getting harder and harder to do stuff without one. Those that know me use Facebook messenger or the landline as I am in most evenings. I am also good at picking up emails.

I know what you mean pat but I find it a very useful tool, I don't use twitface or anything like that but I do use internet banking. I buy and sell cars and Bikes quite often and it's god send to be able to receive and transfer money in a few seconds. Before you'd have to to the bank, get £Xk out then pay the seller then he'd go and put it back in! It's also helpful to be contactable on the road etc. I also have my access token for work etc very useful when travelling our sites around the world.

I do have a mobile and i do take it with me wherever i go. But that is for my own convenience. I use it only to make calls and send messages and, when the occasion arises, taking the odd photograph. All my other 'stuff' is done via my laptop.

On line banking is essential for me, but only on the computer. I visited a bank for the first time in years last week!!

I compromised, I use a tablet at home, but rarely take it out of the house. It's easier than sitting at the pc.

Life , Society , technology , is constantly evolving .

You can go with what you can chose to do without .

It would be stupid to try and do without technology in numerous applications today - medical being just one .

I'd just like to report that I talked myself out of screaming and have settled for a world-weary shake of the head.

I might adopt this as my standard way of dealing with stuff from now on.
We'll see.

I never go out without my phone and I would hate to be without it. I don’t take advantage of all the facilities it offers though but I use it for banking, games, googling and keeping in touch with people. We no longer have a telephone land line.

Grandson age 10 and 3 school friends had their first no parent shopping outing last Friday at the local shopping centre. Location device on phones enabled them to be tracked without being aware parents were watching them at a safe distance

I don't go anywhere without my phone, well not deliberately anyway. It makes me feel safe and I don't know what I would do without it. Recently my car wouldn't start after walking the mutt when I was about 2 miles away from home. Thank goodness I had a phone to call my daughter to rescue me. Even better, thank goodness my friends had a mobile to call an ambulance when I collapsed one time.

Wouldn't be without it.

It's also great when you have to call the AA, I have the app so I just touch the "broken down" button and the AA man arrives!

Truth is I can't afford to upgrade, and won't be able to for some time. The health stuff is a bind as it doesn't work properly on my kindle
