Travel Insurance Delay
Under what category can one claim on one's travel insurance when delayed by US Border Guards at Dublin Airport.
My son missed his connecting flight at Dublin Airport en route from London To Washington DC owing to the US Border Guards at Dublin airoport. For some reason they decided to hold him for questioning about his motives for travel which were for vacation and visiting his girlfriend in the US. He had plenty of money in his account; Visa was in order; he had completed ESTA on line with no issues. This resulted in him having to stay overnight in a hotel and rebook his flight incurring additional costs.
He "sailed" through the Border guard check next day with no problems whatsoever.
Has anyone else had this problem or similar?

Your son will need to read the specific provisions of the particular policy that he took out in order to obtain a definitive answer. However, looking at this policy from Aviva as an example

I doubt that he's covered for such problems.
The section headed "Missed connection outside of the UK" (page 15) only covers delays or cancellations to scheduled public service transport. There's nothing there about delays due to the actions of officials of government agencies. As the "General exclusions and conditions" section (page 9) states that 'any loss that is not specifically described in the cover sections of this policy' is excluded from cover, I can't see any way that a claim for delays caused by US Border Agency employees would be valid under such a policy.

Take a look at my postings within this thread – I would assume the through-ticketing responsibility holds true even if you are delayed due to customs/officials activities.
