Power Steering Light Aygo 2006 :(

Right, here's what happened... Wife went to start her car and it wouldn't go so I popped it on charge for several hours. Wasn't fully charged but car started anyway. Left it overnight and wouldn't start again in the morning so replaced battery as had a spare which seemed okay (had been left charged for a while and still read full on charger) Anyway, started her car no probs but she said it drove funny and there was a light on the dash 'P/S' I had a drive and knew it was the power steering that wasn't working.

So, had a read on here and people said reset by removing black plug on P/S ECU (in footwell, plug nearest to drivers door) which resets the power steering ecu and clears light. Did this, light went off only to come back on after car was left for a while with ignition turned off.

Got a new battery as apparently the ECU can pick up a poor battery and disables the Power Steering. So, fitted new battery yesterday and reset as above by removing black plug but same fault. Light goes off and can drive car fine with ignition on (power steering works great). But if I switch the ignition off and leave car, when I return light is back on and P/S disbaled.

What I have noticed is that the advice said to remove black plug for two minutes and when you plug back in you'll hear a click and the P/S light will go out. I have to do this a couple of times before it 'takes' and I hear the click when reconnecting (and the light then goes off on the dash)

Someone mentioned that the unit loses comms with the ECU. I don't know whether they mean't the P/S ECU loses comms between the main ECU of the car and that's why it then works (as it only checks when you start the engine and as there's no comms between the two ECU's it thinks there's no fault?)

Have also read these P/S units have omrod relays inside that go bad and stick hence causing the P/S light to come on disabling the P/S. Should removing the black plug clear the actual code causing the light to come on or would I need one of those cables from ebay with an OBDII connector that you hook up to your laptop to clear.

So not quite sure which way to go next with this. Can I only clear fault with a OBDII reader hence that's why it keeps getting disabled? Should resetting the P/S ECU clear the code meaning it's a fault with the actual ECU (one of the two omrod relays)

TIA

Take it to an auto electrician and let them sort it out. Will work out cheaper in long run than you trying to sort it out. They will have diagnostics and code readers etc.It just may be a faulty sensor or connector or may need the ecu resetting
