proxy servers

this is a daft question im sure. i have been wondering for a while now. proxy servers. what is the point? if i was using a p2p program, would using a proxy to connect to the network hide my ip from the bad corperate man? is this what they are used for? or are there genuine reasons for proxy servers?

you'd need an anonymous proxy for that. and for best results, route your connections through several proxy servers, in different parts of the world.
yes, there is a good reason for a proxy (but less so in the home). think of a large company network. not every computer there has a direct link to the internet; there will be one main server (the proxy server) with connections to the internet, which the other computers can in turn connect to and access the internet.

Here is a programme which does just that you will have to configure MSN manually but instructions are on the site i think. It also runs IExplorer through a proxy

A proxy can cache results (i.e. if twenty people in a company visit www.bbc.co.uk, the proxy downloads it once and then they get it from the proxy which is usually on the local network, thus saving a lot of bandwidth).
