How can I find if I have a working microphone on my computer? I know I don't have a camera, but while I was messaging someone on Facebook today, I heard a ringing sound, but a message came up that said error and then the ringing stopped. How is it possible to speak to someone on Messenger? Thanks.

What type of computer is it?

Laptops generally have a microphone built in but it's highly unusual on desktops. (Apart from anything else, unlike laptops - which are generally placed fairly close to a user's mouth - desktops are often positioned well away from users, so that any built-in microphones wouldn't be very effective anyway).
PS: As long as there's a suitable input socket, you can always plug an external microphone into a desktop anyway.

Thanks Chris. How do you make and answer calls on Facebook anyway? I noticed there is a telephone symbol so does someone just press that and then the other person answers by pressing the symbol?
Don't ask me how Facebook works; I think I'm banned from the site!

[A Facebook member invited me to view her photo galleries, which I started to do. A few minutes later I got a message telling me that I'd need to sign up to Facebook to proceed any further. I did so and went back to browsing the photos. A few minutes after that I was told that my account had been locked due to 'suspicious activity'. I've since spent months sending ID documents to Facebook but I'm still locked out!]

This might help though:
