We’ve just bathed him in the bath and it was a total success.
Apart from a bit of squeaking he was as good as gold, didn’t try to escape and stood nicely to be washed.
We put about 6inches of water in the bath, with the bathmat at the bottom, and used a plastic jug to soak him rather than the shower head, and some mild puppy shampoo.
Gave him a thorough rinse, let the water out and towelled him dry as much as possible while he was still in the bath.
Definitely the way to go while dog groomers are closed and would have no hesitation doing it again.
Thanks for all your advice, much appreciated.. by us and him :)

He'll find the nearest fox poo now, and have a good roll in it.
My Golden Lab did the same as soon as she was washed.
My dog won't have the slip mat in the bath when I shower him. If I don't remove it, he tries to get out of the bath.
Good news x

Normally he probably would find some Fox poo but these days he only goes for one on the lead walk a day and spends the rest of the time in our fox poo free garden.
The mat we put at the bottom wasn’t an anti slip mat, it was the one you’d step out of the bath on to as it’s quite thick cotton and kind of knobbly so we thought it would give him some grip as well as protecting the bath.
He now smells of wet dog which is somewhat better than whiffy dog, and is asleep in the sun.

Now need to try and trim him, can’t get any dog clippers anywhere so will have to resort to the hair cutting scissors. Could take a while...
My mobile dog groomer made enquiries about whether she could work in her fully equipped van and Just park her clients home. She was told yes if no human contact. She collected poppy Dog from our garden, placed her back in the garden and I paid by BACS. She is really strict about sterile tools and hand washing and arrived wearing scrubs and a hair net.
She also carries a copy of the email giving her permission in case she gets stopped by police. Trading standards, police and council are all aware and happy for her to carry on. She is also a good friend. I did miss our catchup over a cup of coffee!
We did this with Lola yesterday Vegus , and dried her with my hair dryer, she was okay, wouldn’t say she loved it but lay down and played dead ,:0)))
Poppy was looking like a Rastafarian and was gathering all sorts of twigs, burrs, etc in her fur after her daily hike across the field. She now looks respectable.
Bought this and it works a treat, from a Groom professional matt breaker ( Amazon)

I had bought a full kit for Poppy to attempt a cut, but Jane her groomer came to her rescue and started working again after her permission was granted and saved Poppy! So now I shall use the dog trimmer on Mr Apc!
I'm trying to imagine getting Sammi in the bath...I'm not sure it would work. Yet.
