Every time I open an Excel file, a box appears informing me " a document with this name is already open etc. etc."

There is, of course no other document open. How can I stop this?

Chasbo, do you mean this happens every time you open the application Excel or every time you open a new, blank spreadsheet?

Does it also say "do you want to open a copy "

Are you opening an old excel file created in Excel 97 using Excel 2002 or 2003 in Windows XP (probably Service Pack 2 if updated)

Question Author

This is an existing spreadsheet, that I frequently update.

It doesn't ask about opening a copy. Its in windows XP.

When the box appears, I just press OK, and continue, I just want to know why!! Thanks so far!!

save the file with a different name

Have you set this file to open automatically when you open Excel? (Check Tools > Options > general and depending on which version you are running, you will have something like "At start-up, open file C:// File Name in question")

It might be that this file opens automatically and you are trying to open it again?
