Good answers already given, but in a nutshell, an SSD is quicker, more reliable and less likely to develop faults, as there are no moving parts involved. The only downside is the SSD is more expensive than a traditional HDD. If you can afford it, I'd def go for the SSD. My HDD died on me a while ago and I had it replaced with a SSD. The laptop starts up almost instantly...

Described here:-
//HDD: What's the difference? A hard disk drive (HDD) is an old-school storage device that uses mechanical platters and a moving read/write head to access data. A solid-state drive (SSD) is a newer, faster type of device that stores data on instantly-accessible memory chips//
A hard disc drive (HDD) has a metal disc inside, spinning at high speed, and data is written and read by moving a head across the disc. A solid state device (SSD) is a memory chip and data is written and read directly to each bit. This makes SSDs more robust and quicker to access data.

buy the laptop that has the biggest ssd, at least 450 480gb and make sure the cpu is an intel i3 or i5 and for more power an i7 version, iv seen laptops for sale that still use old intel pentium cpu's.
