Is it possible from a technical point of view to carry out EICR home electrical safety tests on a staggered basis, ie one room at a time over several visits? I know that they are usually done in a single visit but is this absolutely necessary from the point of view of the test itself?

To my knowledge the answer to the question is a clear NO - the reason being that the entire dwelling is supplied from the same unit but most importantly the "form" is clearly defined: The premises, not bits of it. Remember that if you had multiple visits and you would almost certainly be charged the same full inspection fee for each one.
You could have each circuit tested one at a time but not each room. But why do you want to do this you might as well get the lot done at the same time.
