For some reason, every time I switch on my pc (windows 98), a folder opens up (C/Programs) on my desktop. It's just a window, I close it, and carry on...

I tried using Mike Lin's STARTUP CONTROL PANEL to stop it, but it doesn't show there. I also looked at the msconfig but I can't see it there either.

Any suggestions?

I had something similar before. It turned out to be either a shortcut to the offending folder or a folder of the same name in the startup folder of the Start Menu. My problems came when trying to get rid of it, since Windows decided it was a system folder so could not be deleted. I finally managed to move it somewhere that was "out of sight, out of mind". You may be able to delete it using DOS on Win98.

This is assuming that what I've said is the problem. I've been using StartupCPL for a while now, so I know what I describe should also appear as an entry. Actually, I've just created a folder in my Startup menu and it DOESN'T appear in StartupCPL! Check it out and let me know!

Thanks Ralph, but it's not that simple. It doesn't show in startup or startupcpl or msconfig...

I don't know much about computers, but it's just a folder from a program I had a look at and uninstalled. It doesn't run the program (which I unistalled using the "add/remove programs function in windows 98) - it just opens the empty folder. I thought about deleting it but then every time my computer starts windows will try to open a folder which doesn't exist, which could cause problems. As I say, it's not a program, just a folder, like opening "my documents" for example, and then I just close it and get on with it. It's not a big deal but just annoying and a bit mystifying. Any more suggestions would be appreciated.
If it's just a folder, it won't show in StartupCPL or msconfig, but it will open an empty folder window at boot up time. If you click Start... Programs... Startup, is there anything like a folder in there? If there is, delete it. If there isn't, I'll shut up and go away! Sorry.

I already looked in the startup folder - nothing there. It's quite a weird thing this, I guess I'll have to trawl the web or find a dedicated computer problem forum for this one.

Anyway, don't be sorry, at least you tried to help. Thanks for that.
