Two Of My Four Laptop Usb Ports Have Become Unusable

A memory stick (Blue |Book) has often shown a message that it needs fixing and every time I have done this. But now it has involuntarily changed its name and after trying to find out what's going on, 2 of the ports don't work any more. I tried plugging my mouse into them, but no go. Is there anything that can be tried at home?
