Please can someone provide a step by step guide on how to convert a batch of WMA or MP3 files into iTunes?

Open your Itunes Music folder from the computer (not from within itunes) and look for the Automatically Add to Itunes

Put the MP3 files in there and watch as they automatically get moved to the relevant place.

Any it cant put into itunes will be left in the folder - so you could try the WMA files the same way and see if that works.
