Increasing Phone Memory

My MotoG phone is low on storage capacity and currently, the memory usage is shown as "3.06GB out of 4.53GB". Therefore, I intend to format my 16GB SD card as Internal Memory.
Can someone please advise me if, after I have done this, my memory usage will show as (e.g.) "3.06GB out of 20GB" or will the SD card memory still show as a separate item?
The reason I am asking is that a friend has had this issue and I'm unsure as to whether she has done the card formatting correctly.

it will format the card as internal or external which ever you choose BUT it will still only take on board photos / music and the ODD app i have this problem i bought a high capacity card thinking i could move most of my apps over, you cant unless the mobile is "rooted"
in storage i see internal storage and sandisk card
It will show as a separate item.

The phone will carefully only store stuff that it can do without, in case the SD card fails (a likely occurrence in my experience)

Thanks for your replies. Not exactly what I wanted to hear but thanks anyway!
in the future get a phone that has 32gb or better still 64gb internal
16gb internal today is way to low, the os eats most of that, let alone apps you install, some phones will not let you install apps to sd either even on rooted android phones, limited by the devs who made x app etc...id would trade the phone in, and get something with higher internal storage built in already, and with advantage of adding sd card for files etc.
