I have heard and read too many negative things about smart meters to want one myself. So its a no from me.
Just say NO.
The pros and cons have been done to death on here....some loving them and others not, so it's all very personal. I have told my supplier I don't want one.....you could do the same - and tell them to stop contacting you on the subject.
I have had two- one at my previous address and one where I live now. No problems with them at all, and you don't have to read your own meters. I also don't get estimated bills. They give you a monitor so you can see how much energy each electrical thing in your home uses. I don't know why people are so against them.
basically you put a meter reader out of a job..
The main drawback is that if you wish to change energy companies it is very likely that the meter will not work with the new supplier.
^^I don't get estimated bills either, because I give the readings online every quarter - hardly a difficult job.

Thanks everyone,i think i will stick to saying no.
There's an awful lot of misinformation and paranoia on t'interweb about smart meters, but nevertheless I'm not having one.
(1) They're for the supplier's benefit, not mine.
(2) It won't save me any money.
(3) The supply can be remotely disconnected - and nothing is unhackable!
This guy knows what he's talking about -
I really cannot see the point. In a large household of teenagers where lights are left on and so on, it might be useful to be able to monitor power usage. If you live in a household where you know what its being used and its being used because you wanrt to use it then what is the point? I send in a reading round quarterly and once a year someone comes to read the meter. If the company are harrassing you then tell them to go forth and multiply.
We're all being harrassed, well those smart enough to still ignore the demands.

Rather surprised then, given the number of times this has come up, the "related questions" list isn't overflowing to a dozen pages.
Yes, you really don't need to be that smart to know what's using up the juice.....3 kw immersion heaters, not 15w lamps!
I am no longer harrased (with OVO). Took the fella to task over the technicals, I suspect my file is now marked with 'troublemaker'

If you dont want one them them to Eff off. They cant force you.
I don't want some under trained fitter making a right mess in my house with no benefit to me.
Totally unnecessary, and you absolutely do NOT have to have one - just tell your supplier you don't want one. I did this (Npower) and they took me off their list.
I understood they were to become compulsory, has that changed?
They are definitely not compulsory, Eddie. They only benefit the supplier, not the consumer.

Do I have to have a smart meter?

While we and the government think that all consumers will benefit from smart meters, they aren’t compulsory and you can choose not to have one.
Choosing not to have a smart meter may mean you don’t have access to all the available tariffs on the market, some of which could be cheaper.
If you don’t want to have a smart meter now, you will still be able to have one installed for free at a later date.
