I have always used 4x in my dvd recorder, but would 8x work as they seem to be cheaper and more readlily available.

8x will play - but will I be able to record onto them?

Most packs of DVD+R disks tell you on the label which drive speeds they're compatible with. I've just checked on Verbatim's website and it seems that their disks should be compatible with your Philips drive.

Thanks for that Chirs
Stick to DVD-R rather than DVD+R. DVD-R are more compatible with most DVD players than its + counterpart
