I have a Canon Pixma MG6500 printer. The scan facility used to appear in Canon Utilities, but now I have no scan facility anywhere. Is this because of updates? What do I have to do to be able to scan again? Do I have to download something?

have you deleted and reinstalled the Utilities program?
What happens if you type 'scan' into the search box?
Do you get Windows fax and scan and IJ Scan utility as 2 of the answers. IJ Scan utility is Canon's own software, so if it doesn't appear you may have to re-install it.

Try Windows Fax and scan and see what happens.

I have got Windows fax and scan appear, but that says I'm not connected. I've just started downloading IJ Scan Utility and at the end it wants paying for updated drivers. Is this right?
why are you using IJ scan if you have got a Canon printer scanner? Go to the Canon website and get the software for the printer you have got.
are you sure you have got the printer model right? I can't find it

It's a Pixma MG 6350. I've gone on to the Canon site and that ends up downloading IJ Scan Utility and costs $9.99 for the driver update.
are you in the UK and are you SURE that you are on the canon website and not on a fake canon website. I have never been chargded to download canon software

I'm in the UK and I think I landed up on a US Canon site. I am totally confused.
ok don't pay the money....delete what you have downloaded....go to the UK site, make sure its the real canon site and try again.

thanks everyone. I'll let you know how I get on.
If you want to scan you only need MP Navigator which can be downloaded from several safe places. Version 5 has compatibility issues with some earlier models but 4.0 should be ok.
It might be worthwhile looking for help from Canon's Official UK Site.

I phoned Canon and they talked me through installing Image Garden, but scan on that is greyed out and she couldn't think why, so sent me a horribly complicated list of instructions which I can't do. I have installed MP navigator but scan is still not available.
Check that your printer etc is showing up in "printers and devices" and that it is showing as connected.

What are you trying to scan?
Did you download and install the Drivers from the Canon uk support site?

Just out of interest try using "Windows Fax and scan" to see if you get a result there. Although I have also got Canon's software installed, if its just a straight copy I need to scan, I tend to use Windows fax and scan because it can be quicker, although you are limited on file extensions.
I don't think MP Navigator and Image Garden are going to assist the Scanner's basic functions. Furthermore, you only need one or the other and I think that Image Garden was a replacement for MP Navigator.

It is my view that the best advice is being given by SlackAlice and should be acted upon, with further feed back from you.

Image garden is part of Canon's software
It may be worth checking your Firewall/Security settings (whatever they are) to make sure your scanner is not being restricted

Just to tell you the end of the story and thanks to everyone for their help: I tried installing drivers from the Canon website but the installation failed, and I had to phone Canon back and they sent me a link to install drivers which this time worked. I'm scanning again...…..
Glad you are all fixed
