I have only 15% of internet left with BT and this has to do me for 9 days - am not too sure but I think they will charge me £1.60 for a "byte" if I go over my limit. I get 15mg a month.

Is there a way of cutting down and where am i going wrong with using the "bytes". The only thing I have been doing a lot of this month is youtubing. Has this used the "bytes" up - sorry for the many questions.

Yes, watching videos will use up a lot more data than cruising the net.

If you are on a landline, switch to a contract with unlimited data.
You could temporarily turn off updates that might help. Check your start up menu and stop anything that you arent using in that session.

oh thanks Hoppy - neighbour thought youtubing was sorta free - I have just been listening and watching through headphones all kinds of music more than usual.

looked at the wee icons at the bottom of screen and found update icon but can't turn it off - it said you were updated 7 hours ago.
15 mg wouldn't last 30 minutes. Do you mean 15 gb?
Jenny I really don't understand this. I have BT and I don't have to watch my bytes?? I have watched tv on it and downloads lots. Maybe you got a different set up to me.
As has been said, watching streaming video service (such as Youtube and BBC iPlayer) seriously eats in any data allowance you might have.

However hardly any internet service providers offer 'capped' services these days; they're nearly all 'unlimited'. In an age where many people get at least some of their TV services, such as Now TV or Netflix, through their modems, 'capped' services simply aren't up to the job.

So, irrespective of which ISP you go with, you really ought to be seeking out a deal which allows you use an unlimited amount of data.
Sharon:
Like many other ISPs, BT used to offer 'capped' broadband packages for people who only used the internet for emails and a bit of web browsing. They no longer market such deals to new customers but Jennyjoan still has a 'legacy' deal, where she's stuck with a cap.

I've said before exactly what Chris has just said....and I'm surprised that BT still has a capped deal. My ISP doesn't even offer one....

yes thanks Chris - I will get friend next week to ring BT again - although I have overdone with the unnecessary youtubing this month - I can live with the 15GB.

friend got me a package yesterday reduced from £60 to £40 but at that time I forgot about the unlimited broadband which I think will rock the price up to £50.
Thanks for that info Chris. I am so glad I've got the 'deal' I have.

^^^^ friend rung on my behalf
But on another thread Jenny has said she's had her monthly payment reduced from £60 to £40 - and that's capped? Outrageous.
We pay TalkTalk, for unlimited fibre-optic broadband (40 Mbs) and unlimited UK phone calls £29 a month.
Question Author
Prudie - I was with Talk Talk for a while but they couldn't cope with my hearing helps. You know flashing phones, flashing lights in the living room, kitchen and bedroom. The flashes went off all the time frightening all my visitors so I had to go back to BT. Even now when the flashes go off after all these years - they never fail to frighten the bowels out of ye.
G'evening Jenny.........I realise that shortly you will be going into a different arrangement with BT. However, I am unaware of the exact deal you have made with BT.

The deal that I have made with BT was outlined in a previous thread of yours and I am hoping that you have something similar...unlimited broadband usage. Ref:-

https://www.theanswerbank.co.uk/Technology/Question1620080.html

Incidentally, I was led to believe that I could expect a download speed of 36 Mbps but I have now been informed in an e/mail from BT......"We estimate your download speed will be between 54Mbps and 55Mbps, and your upload speed will be between 9Mbps and 10Mbps. The minimum guaranteed speed you can expect from your broadband will be 52Mbps".

One does need to keep their eyes on BT and question a lot if necessary.

Hans.

that's right Hans - I have always got 15GB so it is time to ring BT again - as I have said I'll get friend to do it for me.

I am going to ask for unlimited broadband at the same price for £40 and hopefully get it.
Question Author
sorry Hans - the exact deal was what I had all along - the anytime phone and 15GB broadband for £40 instead of £60.
Jenny ...BT is ripping you off. Get your friend to Contact BT and enquire how a friend who lives in South Wales is able to get unlimited Broadband (Including line rental ) and all one hour telephone calls free for a period of 18months, at a cost per month of £33.98; as and from September 18th.

I am copy & pasting what was said in yesterdays e/mail from BT:-

Ongoing charges for this order

16 Sep 2018

From
16 Sep 2018

BT Call Protect £0.00 £0.00

It is often the case that Broadband Providers only give a special discount to new customers. However, whilst I have always been with BT, it was possible for me to be offered a deal as if a new customer.

Hans.

thanks Hans for that info.
We've found BT to be absolutely shocking - both in terms of price and customer service. We've just managed to switch back to Sky for our broadband and phone. BT wanted £175 off us for ending our contract - cue lots of phone calls and now they don't want anything from us (and they offered a brilliant deal if we stayed with them). I appreciate it must be hard sorting things out over the phone but if you did switch to Sky they do a brilliant on-line chat to sort out any problems.
