Cd Drive Not Working

Hi all,

I've got a Dell laptop running on Windows 7.

A couple of days ago, my CD drive stopped working, and it has disappeared from my screen.

I took the drive out and tried it on another laptop, and it works fine.

I assume the software to run the drive has crashed or become corrupt.

Can anyone point me in the direction of a fix please?

Thanks all

Buy yourself cheap external CD drive - that's what I did.
It's probably worth putting it back in then open "device Manager", find the drive under DVD / CD-ROM drives, right-click and uninstall it. Then do Action > scan for hardware changes. The system will find the drive and re-install it. With any luck it might work.

The link to Dell totally confused me, and was no help because I couldn't understand what I was supposed to be doing.

I've tried downloading fixes on Windows, but that hasn't worked.

I've got as far as being told it needs trouble shooting. I've applied the fix, but it says 'There is a problem with the driver for the CD-ROM drive'

Help !

TIA
Click 'Start'.

Type 'devi' into the search box.

Click on 'Device Manager'

Expand 'DVD/CD-ROM Drives'

Right-click on your drive.

Select 'Update Driver Software'.

After updating, restart your laptop.

Cross fingers.

See if the drive works.

It says my driver software is up to date.
Hmmm.

If you're told that the driver is up to date but you've already had a message saying that there's a problem with it, then it seems that it's up to date but corrupt. So you need to remove it altogether and then reinstall it.

Repeat the previous steps but choose 'uninstall' instead of 'update'. (When you restart your laptop the driver should automatically be reinstalled).

Tried that, it just comes up 'failed.'

It points me in the direction of Windows updates, but I'm up to date.

I presume the driver software is corrupt. Can I just delete the software and then (hopefully) re-install it from somewhere?
What's the make and model of the drive? (i.e. what does the line that you've been right-clicking on say?)

It's HL-DT-ST CDRW/DVD GCCT10N ATA

Hope that helps

Hmmm

That's an LG drive but their website says that it use generic Windows drivers, so there's no driver available for download.

You're probably going to have to work your way through this lot:
