Why are there more and more people(especially young people) with no landline? I don't understand how they function!

As most people have an internet connection in their homes these day, they must, by default have a landline.

But it may not be equipped to work as a telephone line, merely a conduit for the internet.

I rarely use my landline for O/G calls, although I still get the odd I/C one.

I completely agree with New Judge. For that reason, very few people have my PAYG non-smart mobile number and those that do have it know that I may well not even hear it as it isn't attached to me like an umbilical cord. Also I tire of my kids phoning my landline from their mobiles when the reception is rubbish/they move into a black hole and the conversation stops mid-sentence. Or they phone while walking down the street in London when the traffic noise often drowns out the conversation.
I haven't had a landline phone for about 15 years. I can't see the point of it if you have a mobile.
Pix...do you have wifi at home ?
Yes mikey- I have a landline, but no phone attached. Have never had a nuisance call either:-)
Thanks Pix...good plan !
I do agree with NJ to some extent. We have smartphones, fibre broadband etc etc and have to have a landline for that but consider our standard landline phone essential as calls are so much clearer. There are many people who don't get good mobile signal and I think that gets forgotten.
The answer is a simple one......its how they choose to live their lives, its what suits them.
Landlines are far more reliable than Mobile phones and offer more security.

If you regularly look into the Technology Section of AB you will soon realise that nowadays the highest number of problems are in respect of Mobiles.

NJ has it right.

Totally agree Hans. On the rare occasions when I need to send a text from home, I either have to go upstairs with my mobile and wave it out the window or walk up the drive into the road. Lots of people in this village have virtually no mobile signal in their house (and I'm not in the Scottish Highlands or anywhere remote!)
I’ve always had a phone on my landline but very rarely use it. If I do, it’s to call 0800 numbers which are free.

I also thought that having a landline telephone number also helped your credit score,as it proved your ability to honour a debt. I could be wrong.
i bought my husband an antique bakelite "ring ring" dial phone for xmas. it has rung about twice since then.
i prefer to have a landline, can't run the computer without one surely?
we are on virgin - you don't have to have a landline to work your computer with them, however as i recall it's more expensive to have no landline on your contract
emmie, you don't need a landline if you have Virgin Media broadband.

You can also buy 'mifi' devices that use a data only SIM to create a wifi hotspot for connecting all your devices to the internet. These are getting cheaper, My data only SIM gives me a 30 Mbps download speed which is faster than many ordinary providers.

not being a very clued up person i only know that when my landline goes down mostly the computer goes with it,
i changed suppliers of broadband, phone from talktalk to EE whom i am quite happy with, at least for now.
That's because your broadband comes down the same line as your telephone :)
Sky provide broadband without a landline,it's what I use ,with my mobile phone 'hotspot' as a backup in case Sky goes down. (which does happen)
Can you provide a link to your Sky broadband, Eddie? The only thing I can find is this which states 'Line rental included'
