Can Anyone Suggest A Free Word Processing Programme Similar To Open Office?

I have been using the Open Office word processing programme for several years with few problems.

Yesterday, continuing to write a long document, I found it underlined in red every word - even the previous text, as it used to do when typing an incorrect word. I then discovered that the thesaurus option was not functioning.

I tried various ways to sort it out -making sure English GB was selected, etc - but in the end removed the entire programme and installed a later one (4.1.5). It is doing exactly the same: underlining all in red and thesarus not functioning.

Is it time to find another word processing programme?

I've seen this recommended, and I think it's similar to OpenOffice: https://www.libreoffice.org/

If Buenchico sees this post, I'm sure he'll be able to tell you what's amiss with your OpenOffice, as that's the one he usually recommends, and it's the one I've used with no problems for many years. Have you clicked on something by mistake?
you might have a virus - do words get underlined in other prograns?

the underlining in red seems to be a common problem, this might help

I'm certainly no Techie, but have found that it could be your Spell Checker isn't working.
See if this makes any sense to you. :))

Thanks all for the quick replies.

aelmpvw and Captain2, I am going to wade through those forum pages, see what is suggested, and try to fix it.

Otherwise I will try libre office as suggested by goodgoalie.
I use Libre Office (linked to by goodgoalie) which is very good
the fact that everything is underlining in red suggests that you have inadvertently changed the language from english to some other language
It should be possible to sort out your problem by 'digging under the hood' a bit with OpenOffice. Alternatively though, uninstall OpenOffice, RESTART YOUR COMPUTER (IMPORTANT!), run CCleaner to flush out any remaining entries, RESTART YOUR COMPUTER AGAIN and then reinstall OpenOffice. (That's the only way to ensure that you get a COMPLETELY fresh installation. I recently had to do the same thing to cure a recurring problem with VLC).

However if you still want to try a different freebie, there are two highly-recommended alternatives. The first, LibreOffice, has already been suggested. The other is WPS Office. (It used to be called Kingsoft Office Free and gained fantastic reviews from many sources. The name might have changed but the software seems to be as good as ever):

I had already checked to make sure I was using English GB. After ploughing through the information on the Open Office forum I gave up and downloaded Libre Office. This works fine.

Thanks for that suggestion goodgoalie and Khandro, and everyone else.

As goodgoalie suggested it first, I will mark you as best answer.
Glad it worked out, Playbill.
