Just thought I'd share that a really noisy thing flew over my workplace today and rushing to the window it was a US marine Osprey, space-age cross between helicopter and plane, never seen or heard anything like it before. For those interested

A few have hit the ground at an alarming rate. Shame, great idea.
Wow, weird looking aren't they. Do they sound like an helicopter or a turbo prop plane ?.

Well from the noise alone I'd assumed it was something like a chinook about 10 feet above me!
Yeah, I can understand that with the Osprey's twin rotors / propellers.

Wow, what an incredible piece of kit, want one!!!
When the engines start they sound like Turbo Props. As they get up to speed, with such long props, they sound more like a big Helicopter. In fast, forward flight, sound like Turbo Props.
When The Donald comes here, they will bring two of them.
Thanks sam.
Baldric, that will be $60 million, cash or card sir?
Twice the price of the equivalent helicopter, three times the running costs, only advantage I can see is speed.
I saw it too flying over Bournemouth Airport. Apparently it came from Hamworthy marine base. It did look strange with those massive blades out the front.

Ahh thanks Ratty I'd wondered where it came from. I was in Bovington, was about 3pm.
that's some machine !
It looks nothing like an osprey!
lol Tilly ..maybe it runs on fish oil ?
Good thinking, Minty.
That reminds me of an occasion about 50 years ago when I was working at Boscombe Down. Being an experimental establishment we had "one of everything" there and my brother-in-law used to love to come down from Lancashire to watch the aircraft flying. We were down at the end of the runway one day when this jet came screaming round...and stopped before it flew away again; talk about eyes on stalks. P1127, of course, became Kestrel and then Harrier. Recognised by everybody nowadays but unknown in those days.
will always remember the Harrier landing on the Castle esplanade during the tattoo.. vertical land /take off and hover..was some sight !
Its been around for about 10 years and not often seen in the picture mode you show. Over our area, a designated low fly zone, we`ve been seeing them for many years.
Britain did it first with the Fairey Rotodyne. This was the plane showed the concept of a hybrid helicopter / aircraft

The big problem was the same as with the Osprey, NOISE .
It was so noisy it was deemed unacceptable.
I saw a Rotodyne at an airshow when I was a child and the noise was deafening .
