What are you trying to play the CD in? Is it your computer or a CD player? If you directly burn MP3 files to a CD you'll end up with a data disc, rather than an audio disc. You'll be able to put that disc into a computer and play the files but the majority of CD players won't recognise it as a valid disc. CD players expect to receive a CD that actually has a SINGLE file on it...

It allows you to choose between 128kbps and 256kbps quality. (Most other software, and online services, only provide 128kbps quality, at best).
PS: I assume that you'll only be using it to download stuff which isn't commercially available, Andy. I'm sure that a music journalist wouldn't stoop to illegal stream-ripping, would he?

I've just noticed (or, more accurately, remembered) that you need to pay for the 'Pro' version in order to get the MP3 download facility. It's just a one-off payment though, on a 'pay what you like' basis, with the options going as low as US$10, so it's well worth it.
(The alternative way of getting MP3 files, using that extension and without paying anything, is to download the MP4 video and then to extract the MP3 content using VLC. It's because I've been doing that myself recently that I'd forgotten about the 'direct' route now requiring a small payment).

Once you've got the extension installed, when you visit a Youtube page you should see a big green 'Download As' button underneath the video, as here:

Click on it, select your preferred file type and then choose where to save it to (just as if you were saving a Word document, or similar, to our hard drive). Easy peasy!
[When saving video at the highest resolution, or MP3 files, you'll encounter a very short wait while the file is uploaded for processing because it can't be done directly on your own computer. If you're saving video files at lower resolutions it's instantaneous]

CD players expect to receive a CD that actually has a SINGLE file on it (even though that file might actually contain lots of different music tracks), with that file occupying ALL of the space on the disc. The file is actually a CDDA one, rather than an MP3 one.
Fortunately you don't have to be a technical wizard to burn a CD which will work in a CD player. All you need to do is to ensure that you've selected the option to burn an audio disc, rather than a data one. (Remember though that, because an audio disc has a single file on it, occupying all of the available space, you can't burn one track to a disc and then add further tracks later on. If you try to do that your computer will see the disc as 'full' when you try to add the later tracks. So you have to assemble all of the tracks in your album together first and then burn them all to the audio CD at the same time).
