Windows 7 media player does not play a cd anymore. Any ideas welcome. all else works.

It's possibly more likely to be a problem with your CD drive than with WMP.

Install VLC (which should be on everyone's computer anyway):

and try playing a CD by following these instructions:

If it works then your problem is indeed with WMP and you should try reinstalling it:

If it doesn't then your problem is with the drive itself and you may need to replace it. (Dirt cheap and dead easy on a desktop, possibly rather more awkward on a laptop).
