A dvd player should play proper dvds.

Only thing I can think of is that either you are trying to play a dvd that is not a region 2 or region exempt or your dvd player is not region 2. Or the dvd player has packed up.

Which dvd player have you got, was it new or did you get it at a car boot etc.

Samsung SH895M...bought in shop
Your DVD Player should play retailed pre-recorded DVD's. Consequently, I can only confirm what has been said by Tuvok.

Scroll down Page 53 of your User Manual and it states that DVD Videos for other than region '2' or 'All' cannot be played.

Hans.
Unless they are Blu-Ray DVDs of course
A long shot, but you could try updating the software if you've not done it already.

Good luck.
