Hi, our HP laptop is only able to connect to the internet in the same room as the router and then slowly. It is fine connected by ethernet, when a download of 46 mbps is suggested. All our other devices (laptops, Ipad) work throughout the house. This problem only started in the last month or so. The retailer we purchased it from tells us it is a router/ISP issue, but this would mean all devices would be affected. I have worked through all six steps of the HP on-line Support (installing drivers etc), but to no avail. Is this likely to be a hardware issue?

Try resetting the TCP/IP stack. (Don't worry, it's easier than it sounds!).

Click start and type 'cmd' (without the quote marks) into the search box.

In the results which will appear above it, right click on 'cmd' and select 'Run as administrator'. (If you're asked for permission to proceed, grant it).

Then type the following line immediately into the window which appears. (i.e. don't start a fresh line, just type away):

netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt

Hit 'Enter'. You should then see a message telling you that you need to restart your computer to complete the action. Do so.

Thanks Buenchico, but unfortunately it has not worked. In fact since leaving my Q it has become worse. Even in the same room as the router the connection is lost and I have to go via HP Support to reset my Network Adapter (it then holds good albeit slow for about 10 minutes). Guess its a network adapter issue which I need to get the retailer to fix (still in 12 month warranty period),




Wireless connection issue. I trust you've turned off the router for a bit then powered it up again ? Ensure that the laptop connects to the right WiFi.
Is it still under guarantee?
It does sound probable that it's a problem with the network adapter but it might still be worth trying the old fix of 'turn it off and turn it on again'. No, I'm not referring to your laptop but to your router.

(I've absolutely no idea why that should work but it's got me out of a hole more than once!)
This might be cured by a cheap WiFi dongle that you plug in to a USB port. They are tiny and cheap
If it is still in guarantee, the OP shouldn't have to resort to a dongle.
As the retailer was mentioned in the question, it may well be less than a year old.
I agree, Hopkirk, but it might be preferable than being without the laptop for however long it takes to get it seen to and repaired.

Thanks all, yes still within warranty period. Retailer insists that I go through HP Support steps first (which I have) and I have tried the router on/off process (although as I said, other devices work fine). Instinctively, the retailer suspects it is the router/ISP performance, so I have got to be sure I have tried all home remedies.
Sounds like the pre-amp or amp is down on the Wireless card or circuit on the lappie.
I changed my wireless card a broadcom version for an Intel 7260 @ £14 and my speed doubled.
